Phone settings
You can use the programming menu on your BT Freelance 501 to adjust the ringer melodies and ringer volumes for handset and base, dialling mode and date and time settings. Press Store , the current external ringer melody is displayed and played. Select a new melody using keypad buttons 1 to 5 and adjust the volume using or then press Store to confirm. Select a new melody using keypad buttons 1 to 5 and adjust the volume using or then press Store to confirm. for 15th March, press 1 , 5 , 0 and 3 .
To exit and return to the idle display at any time, press . If you have subscribed to a Caller Display service via your network provider, the time will be automatically updated on receipt of your first incoming call.

Dialling mode 1 = Tone dialling Dialling mode 2 = Pulse dialling If you do not want to change a setting, press Store to move automatically to the next setting. Press at any time to exit the programming menu and return to standby mode.
6. Use or to select the required dialling mode and press Store to confirm. The current base ringer melody is displayed on the handset and played at the base. Select a new melody using keypad buttons 1 to 5 and adjust the volume using or then press Store to confirm. With all settings now saved, the display returns to standby mode.

Using the answering machine
Your BT Freelance 501 answering machine uses voice prompts to guide you simply through its operation. You can operate your answering machine from: · the base · the handset · remotely, from any other TouchtoneTM telephone, see page 29. The machine announces "Answer on" followed by the current outgoing message, or "Answer off".

Ready to record The answering machine is pre-set to ON, so it's ready to record messages as soon as the base is plugged in. Set the day and time You will need to set the day and time so that the correct day and time is added to messages you receive. Follow the instructions in `Phone Settings' on page 21 to set the date and time. If you subscribe to a Caller Display service, the first call received by your product will set the date and time, but you will need to set the day yourself.
The Answer On/Off indicator on the handset display comes on when the answering machine is switched on. When set to Answer On your BT Freelance 501 will answer calls after the number of rings selected in the answer delay setting and play the selected OGM (outgoing message) to your callers.

Call screening Listen to callers leaving a message and if you wish to answer the call, press or lift the handset.
Listening to your messages via the base
When you have messages recorded on your answering machine, the Messages indicator will flash. All messages are then played back via the loudspeaker, with the oldest message played back first. Press and release until you hear "You have `n' new messages. " Your new messages will be played. Once plays the next message, twice plays the message after that.

If no messages are stored on the answering machine, you will hear "You have no messages". Once a message has been played back, the machine will announce, for example, "Tuesday, four fifty, pm. "
