Each ship has 3 levels of sails at its disposal: Level 0: no sails Level 1: average sails Level 2: maximum sails Level 0 Level 1 Level 2
The level of sails directly influences the speed of the ship. Without an order to the contrary on your part, the ships automatically use maximum sails during their travels. The condition of the selected ship's sails is indicated in the "ship-info" window. The player can raise/lower the sails with the keyboard arrows or by clicking on the "sails" button of the interface bar.

irate hideouts are places where pirates come to resupply.
